Best Guide to Nontoxic Toys For Kids
For the sake of the environment—and their children's health—some parents opt for Earth-friendly, toxin-free toys at holiday time. Here's a bevy of nontoxic toys to consider this year. Let's face it: Some holiday toys are junk by January. And what's not junk may still be unhealthy. Considering all toys "safe" just because they're marketed for use by children can be a mistaken assumption. In July 2004, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled all metal toy jewelry sold in vending machines after some was found to contain lead. And then there's polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which is often labeled non-toxic, but which produces dioxins in the manufacturing process and can contain softening substances like phthalates, considered to be hormone disrupters. Tibesti brings you the BET guide to Nontoxic Toys for Kids!

Like the alphabet blocks in Grandma's attic, this set of 28 wooden blocks features carved letters with fancy scroll borders and simple ink drawings. Individual blocks feature four sides with different colored letters. One side has a number, one side has a picture and spelling of the object below it, such as an owl or duck. Unlike Grandma's blocks, however, these are printed with nontoxic color ink. And to avoid destroying nonrenewable forests, they're made of basswood that's cut from industry-owned and managed land in Michigan. The blocks come inside a nostalgic, wooden pull-toy wagon. Toddlers can load up the wagon and make household deliveries. The blocks can also be used to make all kinds of imaginative structures and, of course, as a tool for becoming familiar with numbers and letters.
