Best Men's Ski Pants & Weatherproof Pants

There are a few things one needs to keep in mind when buying a new pair of ski pants. First of all, of course, there is the form factor. Your ski pants should fit you! Watch out that the pant legs are not too long or the cuffs will likely become shredded when you step in and out of the bindings. Too short and it will look funny and restrict your ability to move. Definitely make sure you get a pair that keeps its form. Just this season I bought a pair that seemed to fit perfectly, however, after I had the pants for three days, they were baggy, almost to double the initial size (and they went back to the store).

Then there is functionality… pants should be durable, weatherproof, and breathable. If they don’t breathe, you sweat. You sweat, you freeze, especially when the temperature suddenly drops a few notches, or you have to stand in line on a cold day. There are different coatings and laminates manufacturers use to make their materials weatherproof and breathable. Water resistant and water repellant pants may be a bit more breathable, but the materials can become saturated when exposed to moisture for a long time. All pants should keep moisture out yet be able to release humidity caused by sweating. Make sure that the pants are seam sealed for maximum protection. Ski pants should be warm but not too heavy. All pants reviewed are weatherproof and use first-class materials that keep the bulk down yet provide warmth and ensure protection against the elements.

Most of us (maybe excluding the hardcore back-country utilitarian) want their pants to look nice too. The models reviewed all have a nice, stylish look to them, at least in my humble opinion.

The Best You Can Get

  • Phenix Chamonix Salopette Ski Pants

Dino says: These ski pants come in black or white. I had a chance to try them in both colors and they look really, really good. Phenix is a Japanese company that dates back to 1952. The company adopted their current name in 1967, initially joining forces with the German ski clothing manufacturer Bogner. Bogner is known to be one of the top of the line ski clothing manufacturers in Europe, but unfortunately Bogner’s line is not easily available in the USA. The Phenix can definitely keep up with the Bogner quality. The Chamonix Saloppette pants not only carry the name of one of the most exclusive ski areas in the world, they just ooze quality and style. These pants are highly water resistance (20,000 mm), have articulated knees for better movement, removable suspenders and an adjustable waistband to dial in the ideal fit. They really look awesome, and have a very good cut. Even though they are more on the form-fitting side, they allow an astonishing amount of movement without becoming baggy after a day on the slopes. Really loved them!

    • Highly water resistant
    • Removable suspenders
    • Sealed seams
    • Articulated knees
    • Exclusive look and feel
  • Kjus: Formula Ski Pants

Dino says: The Kjus company was created by World Champion Norwegian National skier Lasse Kjus. The company was founded in 1997, but really only started a strong showing in the US market in the last five years. Kjus sportswear in general seems to have an air of exclusivity about it, featuring stylish designs and high quality materials. The Kjus Formula pants follow this direction. These are some very comfortable, warm pants with a nice slim fit (so probably more suited for skiers than snowboarders) featuring a very useful stretch construction. I especially prefer stretchable pants on mogul slopes since my knees come up to my chin when I really lay into it.

Water-resistant snow gaiters not only keep out moisture from the inside of your pants, the fortified layer at the hems protects the pants from being cut by the edges of your skis. One great pair of pants!

    • Waterproof and breathable
    • Slim fit
    • Water-resistant snow gaiters
    • Stretch construction
    • Lightweight Thinsulate insulation
  • Arcteryx Theta SV Bib 424 Ski Pants

Dino says: These Theta SV Bibs are as warm as they are light, and that is always a great combination. The superb materials ensure maximum warmth while cutting down on bulk. These pants are extremely durable and have their place on the slopes as well as in the back-country or cold climate expeditions. They have a high-set waist and will keep you warm from your ankles to your kidneys, while an articulated knee and seat area keeps you mobile and flexible. These black pants are comfortable, have a rugged build, and will keep you warm and dry in any weather.

    • Reinforced seat, knees, and gaitors
    • Adjustable waist
    • Abrasion resistant materials
    • Articulated knees and seat
    • Highly weatherproof
  • Cloudveil: Men's RPK Ski Pants

Dino says: In the RPKs, you will stay warm and dry in cold winter weather, yet they are breathable enough to let out sweaty moisture, keeping you cool on warmer days. They have a stretchable Gore-Tex shell, reinforced hems to prevent edge cuts, and ankle gaiters to keep the snow out. Their design makes them look a little bit like a mix of slacks and cargo pants, mostly due to the many pockets they feature. These pants have a very stylish touch with a slightly wider than average fit - in no way baggy - and therefore are a good choice for skiers and riders alike. The RKP pants are available in black and tan.

    • Waterproof and breathable
    • Reinforced hems to avoid edge cuts
    • Waterproof zippers
    • 5 pocket design
  • Arcteryx: Men's Stingray Ski Pants

Dino says: These breathable, waterproof pants are definitely a great buy. One thing is for sure, these will last you a long time, featuring Kevlar enforced cut resistant hems and strong yet soft to the touch Gore-Tex® outer materials. Articulated knees provide excellent freedom of movement. These would be the pants to wear if you are bound to hit the back-country for some untouched powder runs. The pants feature a sewn-in Recco® avalanche reflector, which is a small non-powered electronic transponder that bounces back signals sent out by rescue searchers enabling them to quickly pinpoint your location in an avalanche. Very good pants and they’re comfortable too!

    • Water-resistant powder cuffs
    • Especially cut-resistant hems
    • Articulated knees provide freedom of movement
    • Soft outer material
    • Waterproof and breathable

You will be happy with any of these

  • Marmot: Men's Exum Ski Pants

Dino says: These are some serious pants you’ll be able to wear on the slopes into the back-country, and up for a climb if needed. The Marmot Exum Pants are on the roomier side, and I would consider them more of a professional shell intended to be combined with other clothing layered underneath for added warmth. The shell is extremely weather and waterproof and the pants feel like you could throw anything at them and they would come out laughing. I very much enjoyed the adjustability at the waist and legs to make for a personalized fit. They come in black only.

    • Lightweight construction featuring a Gore-Tex? shell
    • 3-layer taped seams for maximum waterproof protection
    • Full-length side zipper
    • Reinforced knees, seat, and cuffs
    • Adjusters in legs to create a perfect fit
  • Spyder: Tarantula Ski Pants

Dino says: What I enjoy most about these black pants is the way they fit. Earlier this season Beyondski.com co-owner Charles Biggers and yours truly went pant shopping to upgrade our ski school’s uniforms. In regard to the perfect fit, these Spyders would have been our number one choice, especially thanks to the awesome waist adjustment possibilities and the articulated knee construction. (We ended up choosing another model on which the black perfectly matched our uniform jackets.) The Tarantulas are warm and breathable and you have lots of pockets at your disposal, which comes in especially handy when you want to leave your coat behind on one of those nice warm spring skiing days.

    • Multiple pockets
    • Extra insulated pant legs with full-length side zippers
    • Very breathable fabrics
    • Adjustable Velcro tabs to adjust for different waist sizes
    • Abrasion resistant scuffs with water repellant outer materials
  • Outdoor Research: Men's Furio Ski Pants

Dino says: The Furios are very nice, extremely light pants that are built to withstand even the toughest conditions. The full-length, fully seam-taped side zippers make for a nice air conditioning system on those warmer and dry days on the snow. Just zip them open a bit and let the cool air enter. Certain areas on your ski pants suffer more abuse than others and therefore the Furios offer fabric reinforcement at the seat and the knees. The color combination is pleasant and adds a classy look. Highly recommended.

    • Lightweight waterproof and breathable fabrics
    • Full-length side zippers
    • Articulated knees
    • Removable gaiters
    • Great looking black and charcoal color combination
  • Mammut: Extreme Hybrid SkiPants

Dino says: Here are some tough pants with a nice fit. If your pant size won’t change, these probably won’t either and you will have them for a long time. Presenting extremely durable materials with reinforced knees and pant seat sections. A three-layer construction makes these just as suitable for the slopes as for cold mountain climbs and backcountry trips. They are waterproof, highly breathable, and dirt resistant. The Extreme Hybrids come in black, fit on the slim side, and offer lots of maneuverability due to articulated knee and seat construction.

    • Reinforced knees
    • Adjustable suspenders
    • Side sippers for extra ventilation
  • The North Face: Men's Liberation Ski Pants

Dino says: The Liberation Pants have a simple yet very functional design, and they can be had at a very reasonable price. The simplicity actually translates into stylishness. These pants give you everything you need for a regular day on the slopes. They are waterproof, breathable with sealed seams and abrasion resistant cuffs. They are highly versatile, and being considered an all-round snow pant, they can also be worn on winter hikes as well as back-country or climbing trips.

    • Waterproof, breathable
    • Gore-Tex construction
    • Seam sealed
    • Standard fit
    • Abrasion resistant cuffs
