The office armoire is one of the greatest organizational tools known to man! What other room in your house would fit into a closet? You certainly can't sleep in a closet, or cook or eat in one (although if you are scarfing down the last piece of cake, that's is a great place to hide). So if you don't have the luxury of an extra room to use for an office, you don't have to live like a nomad with nowhere to run your life. The office armoire is a fantastic tool that can give you all the space and storage you need to run any operation like a general. The essential components of a home office are a desk, shelving, and file drawers, many pieces out there have all you need.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I recently had to put this theory into practice myself when I had a baby and had to convert our second bedroom from the office to a nursery. I was highly skeptical and nervous about this undertaking, but since I had no other option, I knew the office armoire was my only solution (I just had to get rid of the fish tank to make room). I am happy to report that I write this column from my office armoire, and run my organizing business and the comings and goings of my family from here as well. It can be done, and in fact I am doing it better in the smaller space than I did in the whole room, seriously. Hard to believe, but it's the same concept as packing a smaller suitcase. You really don't need a lot of the stuff that you think you do, and when you streamline down to the necessities, you don't waste a lot of time rummaging around for the right item, and you don't distract yourself with all those shoes you brought for "in case." Just don't forget your passport.

But I digress. Of course, there are many things you have to consider when shopping for an office armoire. The size of the piece is the first issue. You may not have another whole room to dedicate to an office, but you need to make sure you have the wall space for the armoire as some of them can be pretty wide. You also need to figure out what style of furniture works for the room in which it will live. It's also important to take inventory for what exactly you will be fitting into this space. What kind of supplies to you have or need to keep at hand? How much desk space do you need? Is there enough space for the printer, computer, monitor, and speakers? Once you figure that stuff out, there are some really great options out there.

The Best You Can Get

  • Kathy Ireland Home - Mt. View Office 49” W Computer Armoire

Jill says: What can this former super model know about office armoires, you ask? I thought all they did was walk around in skimpy bikinis and not think about real work. What do I know? I do know that this piece has it all. It is so genius because the base pulls out to create a side office credenza which allows for a lot of work space and storage galore! Plus there is a pull out over head light fixture to give it that super cozy (and well-lit) feel. Even though this is an armoire, it really feels like you are in your own office. The armoire features a printer, keyboard, and upper shelf that pulls out on a wheeled track, it has a surge protector with data port, two locking letter/legal file drawers, four small utility drawers, a cork board on the inside, space for the monitor, printer, computer, and fax machine, smaller shelves for supplies. The dimensions are 80" H x 49" W x 23" D and it includes free in-home delivery, including up to two flights of stairs. It comes in a cherry cobblestone finish on hardwood solids so it has a rich, classic look.

Jill says: This armoire is a great quality piece that has all the essentials for an office. At just four feet wide, you'll find generous workspace with great features. The upper cabinet has three adjustable shelves with room for a computer tower and virtually any size monitor. Doors are fitted with wooden file pockets, cork board, and a dry erase board. Those amenities may seem small, but they make the whole thing! The lower cabinet has pull-out keyboard and printer trays and a file drawer for letter or legal size files. The dimensions are 80 1/2" H x 49 1/2" W x 27" D. Simple assembly required. No delivery with an interior flight of stairs or elevator for this item. It has an antique inspired façade and comes in distressed black, honey, or cream.

Jill says: This is a great piece with plenty of space. It is a tad on the wide side, but you get the whole side drawer and cupboard area (with an adjustable shelf) that can help separate your work space from your supplies. It features a deluxe two-tier pull-out keyboard/mouse tray, a generous monitor area, a CPU compartment with pull-out CD rack, a printer/scanner area, two box drawers and one file drawer. It is a handsome piece that is finished in a cherry wood. The dimensions are 55” W x 23” D x 62” H.

Jill says: Crate and Barrel is a good designer without insane prices. This piece is a completely functional workspace in a compact footprint. It features thirteen potential storage spaces. There are three adjustable shelves to help customize your needs, with supply-side storage including numerous cubbies and two drawers for general use or letter-legal filing. The drop-down desktop creates space for a desk chair, then closes up neatly. This is best used with a laptop as the pull down desk doesn't leave a lot of room to store the keyboard, but it makes up for that with it's relatively shallow depth, so if you are short on space, it's a good bet. It is nice looking cabinetry with simple lines in an espresso-stained ash veneer. The brushed nickel pulls add a vintage touch. The dimensions are 50.5” W x 20.5” D x 53.5” H.

  • Distressed Oyster White Computer Armoire with Storage

Jill says: Yes, it's true another hit from the Kathy Ireland furniture collection. The armoire features a pull out keyboard tray and a power center with data ports. It also includes a pull-out printer shelf (a great feature to do the photocopying or scanning on the same machine), along with one box drawer and one file drawer. The top portion has room for CD storage as well as books. Doors open 270 degrees so you don't feel boxed in. It has an oyster white distressed finish with hardwood solids and veneers. The dimensions are 47-1/2" W x 25" D x 68" H. It ships fully assembled.

  • Cherry Computer Armoire Stand Work Station Desk

Jill says: This armoire has all the bells and whistles but not the huge price tag. The complete wrap-around doors open up to reveal cork and magic-writer boards on opposite sides. Those are my favorite amenities in an office armoire. There is a partitioned media storage area above and a full size workspace desk below. Double pull-out provides additional work space on top with a keyboard pull-out below. This is a great feature and really doubles your surface space without enlarging the piece. There is an additional printer pull-out on bottom shelf and a file/storage drawer at the base of this unit. It comes fully assembled and in a traditional cherry cabinet in solid wood. The dimensions are 47" W x 23" D x 69" H.

Jill says: This piece looks great and unique when closed and is super functional when open. The wraparound doors feature cool ribbed panels and it opens to a work area with double pull-out trays for desk and keyboard. That is another one of my favorite features in an office armoire. There are cork and dry erase boards that hang on doors which are so useful for any office space. The unit includes monitor storage shelf, pullout printer shelf, adjustable shelf and bookshelf. It also features a file size drawer with single drawer above it. It has a contemporary cherry finish and brushed steel hardware. The dimensions are 42” x 23” x 69”.

Jill says: This computer armoire really uses space well. It has an adjustable printer shelf and eight adjustable shelves behind locking upper doors. It has rollaway lower door/carts with the right side featuring a work surface and adjustable lower shelf. That is a great feature to double your surface space, which is one of the tough things about office armoires. The left lower door/cart locks and has a file drawer that accommodates letter and legal folders. The unit has a pullout keyboard shelf, interior lighting which makes it so swank, cord management, and bright brass finish hardware. Overall dimensions are 41-1/2” W x 23” D x 71-3/8” H. Ships ready to assemble.

Jill says: This piece is great looking for a reasonable price with some good features. It includes bi-fold doors that fold neatly against the left side, two drawers that hold letter or European size files (not legal). The lower part has storage including a slide-out work surface, keyboard/mouse shelf, printer shelf, and a vertical area for CPU tower. Some other great additional storage areas include a vertical rack for 27 CDs (great if you have a lot of computer stuff or just like to keep your fave bands handy) and an adjustable shelf behind upper door. The design is an updated interpretation of the classic Mission style, featuring a rich warm fruitwood finish accented by rustic, hammered-look hardware. Assembly is required. The dimensions are 62” H x 47.5” W x 21.25” D.

Jill says: Dude, you cannot get more bang for your buck than this puppy. It features a nice space for your monitor, has accommodations for the CPU, has nice little cubby shelves inside on the top, a cork board on one of the doors, and a file drawer. Plus it is low enough to put other storage boxes on top. The smart design hides wires and cables. It is crafted from wood and wood veneers with a rich, harvest cherry finish, wooden inlays, and brushed-nickel accents. It measures 60-3/8” H x 32-1/8” W x 22” D, assembly is required.
