Boys really put clothes to the test: whether they’re shorts, pants, shirts, or tees: the fabrics need to be durable, the “fashions” flexible. Ideally, boys’ attire should be equally eco-friendly. That means made from organic cotton or hemp, treated with low-impact dyes, and sewn by adults, not kids, who are paid a fair wage for their work. Several clothing companies fit this bill.

The best companies are organic or sustainable, affordable, and accessible: they can be found in a variety of toddler sizes. Take a look:

The Best You Can Get

  • Hanna’s Dream

Diane says: The organic, color-grown cotton Hanna’s Dream fashions into shorts, pants and t-shirts seems perfectly suited to a play date, the play ground, or just hangin’ out. The elastic waste makes for a comfy fit, while side or knee pockets offer a perfect place to tuck away little treasures. These clothes are reasonably priced most of the time, but when they go on sale, they’re a downright bargain.

  • Baby Wit

Diane says: A range of t-shirts embellished with humorous sayings and whimsical designs. Take a look at Froggy Flashback on an organic toddler t-shirt printed with environmentally friendly (i.e., no phalates or pvc) inks. In sizes ranging from 2T – 6T.

  • Kid Bean

Diane says: Kid Bean specializes in organic hemp and cotton infant and children’s wear up to size 12. You’ll also find recycled and eco-friendly fleece outwear, shirts, and pants.

  • Oh Geez Organic

Diane says: The Organic Lap Should Tee is made from soft and stretchy organic medium weight rib fabric. Available in earth tones like sage, terra, and sky sizes 0-24 months. Various other organic tees and tank tops available in sizes 2T – 4T, and 5/6 – 9/10, some with matching pants and shorts that feature reinforced seat and knees.

  • Rawganique

Diane says: From tees and jeans to hats and underwear, Rawganique offers a wide selection in both organic hemp and cotton. Note that hemp is particularly durable, while the organic cotton boasts about its softness. Very reasonable prices, in sizes ranging from 2T to 12T.

You will be happy with any of these

  • Positively Organic

Diane says: An array of natural-hued organic short-sleeved t-shirts printed with dragonflies, bugs, flowers, and butterflies match with bright green, yellow, orange, or red yoga pants. The Earthline Canvas Cuff pants in coral, green or teal complement long-sleeved t-shirts in bold nature prints like leaves and concentric circles.

  • Patagonia

Diane says: If you want your kids to actually try on their eco-clothes before you buy them, head to Patagonia. You’ll find t-shirts, pants, long-sleeve crews, and shorts made from Capilene 1, a silky Patagonia-created fabric fashioned from 100% recycled jersey-knit polyester with built-in Gladiodor™ natural odor control. Another benefit? When your child has outgrown or outworn the garment, recycle it at the company’s Common Threads Recycling Program.

  • Fig Organic Clothing

Diane says: Boys won’t tire of wearing organic cotton shorts in bright colors like orange and lime green. Make a match with a muscle tee, regular tee, or hoodie.

  • Garden Kids Natural Clothing

Diane says: This collection is mostly t-shirts and shorts in summer; check for winter styles once the colder weather arrives. Whatever the style, the fabric remains the same: soft but durable organic cotton.

  • My Goodness Duds

Diane says: The organic t-shirts in this collection are generously sized to allow room to grow as well as a shrinkage allowance. The flat construction of the ribbed knit neck band makes it easy to slip on and off. There may not be enough variety here to do a lot of shopping, but the tees would make a charming gift. Available in 2T and 4T.
