Best Women's Cross Trainer Shoes & Women's Cross Trainer

It wasn’t that long ago, that an active person’s day of hiking up the side of a mountain in the morning, playing a game of tennis at lunch, and maybe going for a jog after work, all were accomplished in the same low cut basketball shoe that Dr. J wore! Can you imagine? My ankles hurt, just thinking about it!

In more recent years, the big brand named shoe companies got smart and realized they could slap the face of an overpriced athlete on a box and move a million pair during the Christmas selling season! Never mind that the shoe inside the box was garbage! Well “good riddance” to that, too!

Thankfully, you, today’s consumer, has become the savvy one, and the companies that make those shoes have had to adapt, and adapt they have. The modern cross training shoe is a perfect example of that, with great ankle support, solid soles, waterproof material, and many more features, having become standard fare. The cross training shoe section of any sporting goods store today is a smorgasbord of general and specialty products built for any activity you can think of, and probably some you haven’t. The key is to just take the time to pick the right one.

A couple simple things to consider when buying a Cross Training Shoe are:

1. What do I need a shoe for? Is it multiple activities, or do I need something specific? If you’re training for a marathon, go get a high-end running shoe! Duh!

2. If I decide I do need a cross trainer, then what “dominant” activity will I be participating in? Obviously, if hiking through the woods is the chore, then an aerobic shoe might not be the right choice, as you’ll want to err toward more ankle support.

3. Finally, what other activities might I be doing? Sticking with the above example, you’re not going to want to go to your aerobics class in a hiking shoe that has creek sludge all over it from yesterday’s trek up the Matterhorn!

The Best You Can Get

  • Vasque Mantra Women’s Cross Trainers

Lee says: The Vasque Mantra tops the list of women’s cross trainers by delivering work boot durability with all the athletic flexibility and versatility of a high-end running shoe. The sole is engineered to grip even the most rugged terrain, yet the breathable air mesh interior and generously padded ankle are almost comfortable enough to play basketball in. It’s pretty darn good looking too, so if you’re looking for a shoe that performs as well on the road as off, then the Vasque Mantra deserves a solid look.

    • Serves up comfort whether test-driving a new mountain bike, hopping boulders along a riverbank, or setting out on a long day hike
    • A large portion of the upper consists of a thick 1.8 mm water resistant nubuck leather that looks great but is also durable and protective
    • Panels of breathable air mesh compliment the leather, providing comfort during warm weather and extended outings
    • A molded EVA mid-sole and dual density EVA foot-bed provide cushioning while a molded thermoplastic urethane plate offers support and stability to easy the strain of uneven terrain and encourage healthy biomechanics
    • Known as the Ananasi outsole, the sophisticated Vibram tread grips challenging terrain even when moving at a fast pace
  • New Balance Women’s WT 1110 GT Multisport Shoe

Lee says: I’m a New Balance fan to begin with, so the WT 1110 GT Multisport was a no-brainer for me. New Balance’s second to none running shoe technology is surrounded by an extra supportive upper portion on top and a rugged durable sole on the bottom, that make this shoe perfect for long cross country runs, day hikes, and any other outdoor activities you can throw at it. It certainly can accommodate most indoor activities, but I’m guessing shortly after it’s pulled out of the box, it’ll be too darn dirty!

    • A Gore-Tex XCR outdoor cross trainer that is swift enough for trail runs while being supportive enough for day hikes
    • Waterproof and highly breathable, XCR keeps feet dry while letting perspiration escape, and the seamless upper portion of shoe looks great and allows for increased durability
    • Top of the line New Balance technologies include “Abzorb FL” for increased cushion, “Ndurance” for durability in hard wearing sole areas, and “Rock Stop 2” to ease trail harshness and toe protection
  • Aetrex V656 Voyage Cross Trainer

Lee says: Aetrex has delivered a cross trainer that may be the top on the list for indoor exercise activities like aerobics, circuit training, even tennis. The V656 is engineered to provide unrivaled stability from the bottom up versus the ankle down like most shoes, and with this stability comes added comfort. Another feature is the removable orthotics which can add extra support for outdoor activities on rugged terrain, or be removed for less variable indoor activities such as walking on a treadmill.

    • Features high tech, breathable uppers and open-air layered mesh linings to keep the foot healthy, cool and dry, yet are lightweight and soft to provide unmatched comfort
    • Constructed specifically for rear foot stability and forefoot flexibility for fluid motion while running or walking
    • Feature patented, removable Aetrex orthotics, and “Pressure Relief System” allows for easy customization of fit and comfort
    • Biomechanically engineered multi-density mid-soles and the outsole features strategically placed pods for floating independent suspension and shock attenuation
  • Ahnu Lodi WB Women’s Cross-Training Shoes

Lee says: An outdoor cross training beauty, the Ahnu Lodi’s rugged design is perfect for any activity where the terrain demands stability and traction. A key feature of the Ahnu Lodi is the rubber sole with cross-directional lugs, a configuration that is almost cleat like. Loose rocks, slippery slopes, dusty dirt are no match for The Ahnu Lodi. So if outdoor hiking is your primary cross training activity, then this shoe is certainly worth a look.

    • QuiteLight® construction principles throughout the shoes center on superior comfort and materials with exceptional strength-to-weight ratios
    • Hydrophobic, fast-drying polyester mesh uppers are highly breathable; leather and synthetic nubuck overlays offer structure and support
    • Lace lock system is fully integrated into the upper design for ease of use and features a single-finger lock release; Tech-Dry linings are made of a recycled polyester and charred bamboo blend for natural antimicrobial & moisture-wicking properties
    • Lightweight, dual-density EVA foot beds and mid-soles provide shock absorption and cushioning comfort, and shock dispersal plates in forefeet offers extra protection against stone bruising
    • Dual-density heel plugs promote overall stability and help combat overpronation, and nonmarking rubber outsoles feature self-cleaning, cross-directional 3.5 mm lugs to optimize traction
  • Nike Women’s Shox Trainer Accomplish Cross Training Shoes

Lee says: I’ve always been a little too cynical of the “celebrity factor” to be a big Nike fan, but in recent years, Nike has really begun to focus less on sponsorship and more on craftsmanship! The Nike Shox line of women’s footwear is a prime example, and the Accomplish Cross Trainer is the marquee product of the Shox line. Nike has engineered extra support into the heel and mid-sole for the hard surfaces of the gym floor or maybe a tennis court, and the open mesh upper provides excellent ventilation for an active foot. You won’t go wrong with this indoor cross trainer, if aerobics, circuit training, even tennis are part of your routine.

    • The Nike Shox TR Accomplish is a supportive and stable training shoe designed for gym-based functional training activities
    • Lightweight and breathable open mesh upper, and Dynamic mid-foot strap adds support
    • Lateral forefoot support strap provides stability, and Nike Shox unit in the heel; phylon mid-sole gives a light and comfortable fit
    • Non-marking green rubber pods with a gym traction outsole deliver flexibility, durability, and support where you need it

You will be happy with any of these

  • New Balance 621

Lee says: If based purely on quality, the New Balance 621 might belong with the Best of the Best, but since the premium priced New Balance WT 1110 was already on that list, I decided to put the 621 at the top of the economy class. This may be your best bet for an indoor trainer if your looking for a shoe to wear to the gym, ride the stationary bike while there, and maybe meet some friends for a drink at the sports bar afterward. You won't want to log 25 miles of running a week on it, but the New Balance 621 is a solid, economical cross trainer for everyday use.

    • This women’s New Balance® 621 is a versatile trainer with Abzorb® technology in the heel and forefoot for superior shock absorption
    • The C-Cap® Lightweight compression-molded EVA mid-sole provides cushioning and flexibility
    • The solid rubber outsole delivers durability and traction, and the leather and mesh upper offer breathability and support
    • Abzorb® in the heel softens the impact, absorbs shock and displaces energy
  • Ryka Women’s Cross Train Lace-Up

Lee says: Perhaps the best looking shoe on our list, the Ryka Women’s Cross Train Lace-Up is part of Ryka’s long list of women’s specialty athletic shoes that has really gained a following in a relatively short time. The cushioning cartridge in the forefoot and rear foot give the Train Lace-Up great support and stability, and the upper is dressed with a nice compromise of leather and mesh to make it supportive yet breathable and comfortable. Another feature of the Train Cross-Up is the removable sock liner that provides plenty of stock support, but can be removed to accommodate most orthotic inserts.

    • The everyday trainer never looked or felt so nice
    • Leather and mesh fused upper is supportive yet breathable and molded Nitracel sockliner imparts cushioning and comfort or can be removed to accommodate orthotic inserts
    • Mid-foot TPU shank delivers support and stability, and durable forefoot and rear foot-cushioning cartridge provides rebound and shock absorption
    • Rubber outsole offers traction and grip
  • Oboz Switchback Women’s Cross-Training Shoe

Lee says: When I first looked at the Oboz Switchback Cross Trainer Shoe, I had to do a double take at the price tag. I know that Oboz manufactures a solid line of outdoor shoe, but I’d been accustomed to seeing a premium price. Beginning with the high-friction rubber sole that is comfortable on any terrain, the Switchback is first and foremost a rugged outdoor shoe. But when you consider the synthetic leather and breathable nylon upper that is engineered for flexibility and versatility, you’ll find the Switchback is a high quality athletic shoe. Whatever activity fits your schedule might be the perfect home for the Oboz Switchback Cross Training Shoe.

    • Durable, lightweight performance in a comfortable, all-synthetic package
    • Rugged synthetic leather and breathable nylon mesh uppers resist abrasion, and nylon mesh linings wick moisture, dry quickly, and further enhance breathability
    • Anatomic EVA foot beds and dual-density EVA mid-soles provide cushioning over a long day of hiking or a short burst of high-impact activity
    • Nylon plates offer torsional stability and protection underfoot, increasing surefootedness on varied terrain and reducing rock bruising
    • High-friction, non-marking rubber outsoles grip both wet and dry surfaces with ease
  • Nike Zoom Trainer Essential

Lee says: The Nike Zoom Trainer Essential is a great cross trainer for all those activities you’ll do from the minute you walk in the gym door until the minute you walk out. The rubber pod sole and the support straps yield stability, and the light weight, breathable upper and Zoom unit and flex grooves, yield cushioning and flexibility. Thus, whether it’s circuit training, the stationary bike, the stair climber, aerobics, etc, you’ll have a one-stop shoe in the Nike Zoom Trainer Essential.

    • The stylish and innovative Nike Zoom Trainer Essential women’s cross-training shoe is built to withstand the demands of your rigorous workout
    • It’s crafted using a lightweight and breathable upper with mid-foot and lateral support straps for enhanced durability and support
    • The Zoom Air unit and flex grooves enhance cushioning and flexibility
    • Low profile, lightweight injected unit sole, and Flex grooves provide maximum forefoot flexibility
    • Non-marking rubber pods with a gym traction outsole for flexibility, durability, and support where you need it
  • Nike Women’s Air SPARQ Trainer Cross Training Shoe

Lee says: Another Nike rounds our Best of Rest, with the Air SPARQ Trainer Cross Training Shoe. The Visible Max-Air unit encapsulated in Phylon adds somewhat more cushioning, making the Air SPARQ Trainer slightly heftier than the Zoom Trainer above. However the breathable streamlined synthetic material makes it equally as comfortable for those longer hot workouts. Thus, if you’re a light treadmill runner who likes to jump right into some strength training, but doesn’t need a high-running shoe, then the Nike Air SPARQ Trainer may be the answer.

    • The Nike Air SPARQ TR training shoe was designed with the physical demands of SPARQ and Dynamic Training in mind
    • Unique breathable upper with streamlined synthetic overlays offers great fit
    • Visible Max-Air unit encapsulated in Phylon adds the perfect blend of cushioning
    • Non-marking solid rubber outsole with multi-directional tread and TPU mid-foot shank provide torsional rigidity
